Welcome to English as a New Language (ENL) at the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District! The District has a free-standing ENL program where foreign students are serviced at Merrick Avenue Middle School, Grand Avenue Middle School and at Sanford H. Calhoun High School. In our program, students follow a regular course schedule that is supplemented by English as a New Language courses according to their English proficiency level, which is currently classified as Entering (0), Emerging (1), Transitioning (2), Expanding (3) and Commanding (4). The academic purpose of the program is to assist student learning the four skills of English (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), as well as to support their learning in the content areas of Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts with the goal of obtaining a high school New York State Regents diploma. The program also aims to aid students' transition to the Bellmore-Merrick community so that they are comfortable and secure in their surroundings, building confidence and skills necessary for success.
